The House of Ladurée in Paris is well known for their macarons, but they also have gorgeous cakes, chocolate, amazing wedding cakes, a line of candles as well as gifts. Each store is stunning... I was absolutely mesmerized by each photo! I would love to visit each location someday.

I was so excited when I visited their adorable website that I pinned, and pinned, and pinned so many images to Pinterest.

EMELINE NECKLACE - LOOK ONE

I'm going to start putting looks together showing different ways you can wear some of my designs. First up, the Emeline necklace. The first look I created is more casual featuring a pair of skinny jeans, a gray cardigan with a simple white t-shirt, finished off with a wide belt worn over the cardigan. I picked a pair of flats, but it would also look great with a pair of tall riding boots. And to finish the look, I added the statement-making Emeline necklace. I hope you like it! I was just reading the latest issue {January 2012} of one of my favorite e-zines, Matchbook Magazine, and was really in love and inspired by these gorgeous photos from the Winter Welcome article {which btw, gives some great tips from creative experts on hostess and party planning this season}! I had to share them.

Different textures and shades of silver, gray, and white look so lovely together, especially for Winter. So, does this make you want to plan a party? Or, maybe just redecorate?

Moby's New Home In The Hollywood Hills - Wolf's Lair

I was watching a special on HGTV a few weeks ago that featured various celebrity homes... one in particular really caught my attention; Moby's new L.A home in the Hollywood Hills called Wolf's Lair. It is an amazing french-inspired castle {and it's not a kitschy castle, either}! I especially love it because it has a lot of old Hollywood charm and details, plus it was built during the 1920s {one of my fav decades}. And the name, Wolf's Lair...super cool!  

{Wolf's Lair is actually named after the original owner and builder, L. Milton Wolf. He was one of the real estate developers who built many homes in "Hollywoodland" during the 1920s}.

Moby put about $2 million into renovations including the addition of three bathrooms to the main house. His goal was to get rid of anything in the house added after 1945, except the guest house which was designed by John Lautner {John Lautner was a protege of legendary architect, Frank Lloyd Wright}.

This year I'm the official "pie maker" for Thanksgiving. I decided to make two pumpkin pies and one cheesecake with a blackberry topping... just to change it up a bit. {and all three are dairy-free... no migraines triggered by dairy, yay!!} :)

2 pumpkin pies just about ready for the oven... 1 cheesecake to go!

I'm so very thankful for all of my blog readers & supporters! So for all of you in the US, I hope you have a fabulous holiday weekend with your family and friends.

For some reason, I've been inspired by Little Red Riding Hood. I'm not sure why, but she's been popping in my head a lot lately. Does that ever happen to you... something totally random just keeps popping up into your mind?

So, I've decided to go with it and let LRRH inspire a new piece or two {I'll post pics of those in the very near future}.

Model Dorian Leigh - Vintage Glamour

I had seen these beautiful images before, but I never knew when they were taken, or who the photographer and model were... well, after a little internet detective work I finally found out more about them!

These fashion photographs were mostly taken during the 1940s and 1950s and featured Texas-born fashion model Dorian Leigh. She was considered to be the world's first supermodel and one of the earliest modelling icons of the fashion industry.

She was well known in America and Europe. She started her modeling career at the age of 27, which was unheard of and considered old in the modeling world -plus, she was only 5' 4" tall - she definitely broke the "model" mold.  

Her career started after a friend urged her to have professional photos taken. Afterwards, she met with the editor of Harper's Bazaar and fashion photographer Louise Dahl-Wolfe and was told to return the next day to shoot a cover for a 1944 Harper's Bazaar issue. As it turns out, they didn't know Dorian's real age at the time. They thought she was 19  or 20 years old and were shocked to learn later on what her real age was.

Dorian was an instant success and was booked for modeling assignments frequently. She graced top magazine covers in the United States and Europe such as Vogue, McCall's, Harper's Bazaar, LIFE and Elle. She also became well known for her advertising work for Revlon Cosmetics, especially the 'Fire and Ice' campaign {the 'Fire & Ice' shade is still, to this day, a top-selling Revlon shade}.

On the cover of Vogue - 1946.

At 40 years old, her career as a model was coming to an end, so she started the first legal modeling agency in Paris, France. She later expanded her modeling agency with additional offices in  Hamburg, Germany and London. 

Dorian eventually moved to New York State and went on to write two two cook books titled "Pancakes: From Flapjacks to Crepes," in  1987 & "Doughnuts: Over 3 Dozen Crullers, Fritters and Other Treats,"  in 1994. {interesting note: she also worked with Martha Stewart in the 1980s} 

In 1980, Leigh also published an autobiography, The Girl Who Had Everything (Doubleday). Dorian Leigh died at the age of 91 in 2008. She was survived by three of her five children; her son Kim and  daughter Marsha pre-deceased her. She was also survived by grandchildren  and one remaining sister.

Heading in a New Direction -Good Change!

I've decided to make a few changes regarding my business, Shandy Nicole Designs, and its direction. So for the next month or so I'm going to be revamping my website {www.ShandyNicole.com} and my collections. I'm going to have new product photos taken, I'm adding e-commerce to my website, and I'm completely changing my marketing and advertising plan. I'm SO excited! 

It's going to be a lot of work, but so totally worth it in the end. After a lot of trial & error and late nights making plans, I know exactly where I want my business to go and what direction to head towards. 

It will be a little quiet around here while I work on all the new stuff, but I'll catch ya soon with a whole new direction! ;)

New Packaging Photos

Over the weekend I took a few new shots of my packaging. I didn't really like how the old pics looked... at all! My Mom helped me change the whole display and we tweaked a few things to give it a whole new look. I think they turned out great.

I LOVE how it turned out. I think it represents the feeling of my jewelry/brand a bit more than the old pictures {I hope}. I'm still working on a different way to display my logo... but for now this is so much better.

New Pieces and a New Collection Are On The Way!

I've been working on a few new pieces that will be part of a new collection called "Beautiful History". This collection will feature jewelry that's inspired by history and translated into beautiful, unique creations with an antique/vintage feel.

Sotheby's Geneva Noble Jewels Auction

I wish I could have been there! Sotheby’s Geneva just sold an impressive collection of jewels featuring some of the most amazing pieces from the 1800's & 1900's. They sold this emerald and diamond tiara {circa 1900} for over 12 million dollars. The tiara was formerly part of Princess Katharina Henckel von Donnersmarck's collection. Absolutely gorgeous!

Here are a few more stunningly beautiful pieces that were recently sold as part of the Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels collection which featured every type of stone and design you could imagine.

Royal presentation brooch

The Royal Presentation brooch, circa 1940, was designed for Elizabeth Regina, Queen Elizabeth, consort to King George VI. It features guilloche enamel and diamonds.

Diamond necklace, circa 1909, weighing a total of 161.29 carats. Sold for nearly $2.7 million USD.

This emerald and diamond set included the necklace, earrings and a ring. Sold for $1,366,641.25 USD

Photographer Fred Stein 

I'm a huge lover of photography and Fred Stein is one of my absolute favorites! I've been a big fan and admirer since I came across some of his photographs over a decade ago. His story is pretty incredible and inspiring. He photographed along the streets of Paris & New York and also shot many portraits of some very interesting and influential people.

Paris -Embrace, 1934

He was born in Dresden, Germany on July, 3rd 1909. He was an active anti-Nazi activist and studied law at Leipzig University in hopes of becoming a public defender. After he obtained his  law degree, he was denied admission to  the German bar by the Nazi government for “racial and political reasons". After he married, he and his wife, Liselotte Salzburg, fled to Paris to avoid the threat of Fascism after the special security (SS) started inquiring about him.

While in Paris, he began taking photographs and became known as a pioneer of the small, hand held camera. He saw hope and beauty where most people would only see despair on the streets of Paris.

In 1939, after Germany declared war on France, he was put in an  internment camp for enemy aliens outside of Paris. Incredibly, he managed to escape and eventually met his  wife and young daughter in Marseilles, France. After obtaining visas via the  efforts of the International Rescue Committee, they boarded a ship (one of the last to leave France) and left the country. According to his bio, they only had a camera, some negatives and a few prints with them when they left. 

I'm not sure when, but they eventually arrived in New York City where he began photographing the city as well as artists, politicians, writers and scientists. His portrait of Albert Einstein is his most well-known and famous picture.

He mainly worked on his own independently, photographing scenes as well as people that caught his interest. He generated most of his income through portraits and commission work.

Fred Stein passed away in New York City on September 27, 1967 at the age of 58. Throughout his career, he  had several exhibitions and had  quite a few books published. His work was featured in newspapers, books and magazines worldwide. In addition, some of the photographs can be found at the  Smithsonian American Art Museum, the International Center of Photography  in New York, The National Portrait Gallery, the Center for Creative  Photography in Tucson, the Musee Carnavalet in Paris and the Jewish Museum  in New York. His son, Peter Stein, preserved the archive of his work.

Just a quick post about an AMAZING dress I came across on Pinterest {By the way, I'm totally IN LOVE with Pinterest!}...

It's actually a wedding gown designed by Vera Wang. I love it because it's so different, especially the color combination. Definitely describes thinking outside of the box. Very inspiring design. Love it!

Inspired by Lighting

I've really been thinking a lot about lighting the last few weeks. Primarily because photographing jewelry is tricky and lighting is one of the big keys. So I've been looking at lighting in a whole new way...

Watching the show Color Splash Miami on HGTV the other day, I fell in love with the lighting installation in this living room {the pictures I posted below are REALLY bad. I couldn't find any online, so I tried to capture these from the online episode.}- 

I love the black and white stripe carpet tile rug!!!

Very dramatic!

Another HGTV designer I love is Candice Olsen. She has amazing ideas when it comes to lighting {much better photos}.

Here are a few other examples of how lighting can dramatically change it all.

I love lighting in unexpected places. It can transform the entire look and feel of a room indoors or outdoors...

It can make something that once was unnoticeable, very noticeable!

I've been working day and night to get everything ready for my official online launch. I'm aiming for Monday, February 21st ... hooray!!

Here are a few more designs that I just finished photographing today. These will be available for purchase on Monday.

I've Been Busy... New Jewelry Designs!

I've been working like crazy on my jewelry the last couple of weeks. I'm just about ready to upload everything to my site and Etsy. I finally received all my packaging and business cards and I've been studying the photography books to perfect all my photos. So I'm FINALLY just about ready to go! Woohoo!!

Pink and Black Valentine Inspiration

After Pantone named Honeysuckle the official color of 2011, and with Valentines Day right around the corner, I've been thinking a lot about shades of {honeysuckle} pink. I think pink combined with my absolutely favorite color, black, looks especially lovely. I came up with this inspiration collage on my newest obsession - Polyvore {Why haven't I discovered this site before now?!? I highly recommend it if you love anything to do with fashion and creativity. It's a lot of fun to mess around with all the beautiful things and really get inspired}.

Stay a Night at The Palace de Versailles - True French Decadence

I am so completely excited about this - Starting in late December 2011/January 2012, you will be able to stay at Louis XIV’s Chateau de Versailles! Can you imagine staying on the grounds of Versailles? Talk about a dream vacation in true French decadence! I originally read about this on The Lonny Blog and had to find out more...

The Hotel du Grand Controle

It was announced in December that one of the satellite buildings {The Hotel du Grand Controle} will be transformed into a 23-room luxury hotel. Some of the rooms will overlook the "Orangerie" which is an elaborate greenhouse where Louis XIV stored his 1,700 orange, lemon and palm trees during the winter months.

The Hotel du Grand Controle, was built in the 1680s  to serve as the home and offices of the king’s treasurer, where he  also lived. During the French Revolution it was  evacuated, along with the rest of Versailles. During the 1800 and 1900s, it fell into a state of disrepair. The building is currently undergoing a 7.3 million-dollar renovation.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more news about it. I read it may cost close to $800 per night, but I think it would be worth it for such an amazing experience {at least for a night or two. I need to start saving for this}. I wonder how long of a wait it will be until you can get a reservation??

I watched the Golden Globes on Sunday {something I haven't done in a couple of years} and my absolute favorite part about it, and most award shows, is being able to see what everyone is wearing. This year there were so many gorgeous gowns.

A Snowy Heaven in Nashville

I've been in heaven the past few days. Here in Nashville, TN we've had snow on the ground for about 5 whole days! Starting early Monday morning we've collected around 3-4 inches. 

I love the snow and since I moved here it hasn't been around too much, especially for this long. Usually it doesn't stick around for more than a couple of days - so this has been awesome! :)

I saw this photo on The Lonny Blog and I had to share it. This was taken in 1907 - the first year they "dropped the ball" in Time Square. I've never seen it in person, but it's on my list of things to experience soon!
